Rating local kid-friendly cafes/restaurants
Scale= 1-5
Differential=how good their lighting is for pulling out white hairs.
Steeplechase: A 4. Too much shadow. Great overhead light though, so I’ll give it a 4.
Brooklyn Commune: 2. Lighting is much too flattering to be useful for pulling out whites.

Nostalgia
We are getting a new bathroom on the 3rd floor of our house (yes, we got in just before the market went nuts. Hate us if you like.) The contractor/bathroom artisan showed me the tree rings yesterday—layers of wallpaper dating from the 40s (swans, blue background; demure); 60s (regular print of small flowerlike designs in a coral, blue and gray pattern).

A 3-year old's most important accessory: A library...
My daughter now has one. Green, plastic, shiny, and checkout is by a bar-code scanning system now, not like the nice older women who checked books out for me by hand at the Stewart Manor Library, next to Pellegrini’s Butcher Shop in the shopping strip of the small town next to mine.

Mama's Got a Brand New Bag
And I promised myself it wouldn’t get overrun with kid stuff. Like broken crayons, old crumbs, inkstains, or overripe fruit. I paid 185 bucks for it at Century 21 (I wasn’t sure if I’d even keep it; not used to spending that kind of cashola on self.)
